Mogiana, one of Brazil’s oldest coffee-growing regions, lies along the São Paulo–Minas Gerais border and is named after the historic Companhia Mogiana railway, once known as “The Coffee Train.” Coffee has been grown here since the 1800s, with the region now producing over a million bags annually. Its red soil, diverse microclimates, and elevations of 900–1,050 meters contribute to distinct cup profiles. While Brazil's flat terrain and high labor costs have led to large, mechanized farms, modern harvesters now enable selective picking of ripe cherries, improving quality. In steeper areas, tools like vibrating rakes paired with tarps allow for efficient semi-mechanical harvesting. These innovations have helped shift the focus toward cup quality, with most cherries sun-dried on patios and turned regularly for even drying.
